But, this app is 95% of the way there and only needs a bit more tweaking (as far as I can tell) to get a large number of games working, and working well. I'm thinking of buying it now, and I never buy anything before a final 1.0 release. It's definitely worth trying out on your own N64 game collection. I'm glad so much of the effort thus far has been put into making the application useable and user-friendly. Rest assured, at only version 0.8.5, this program is extremely stable and data safe. I don't have the entire N64 game catalog at my disposal, so maybe you'll have better luck with your collection. Some games appear to work but freeze and or cannot save data later (i.e. Goldeneye, The World is Not Enough, Donkey Kong 64). The rest, many of them the most popular N64 titles, either don't work or technically function but are simply unplayable (i.e. The only one I've found so far is Mario Party 3. It seems to me that very few games work on it well enough to actually play. I know emulators (on PC or Mac) take a lot of work, which explains why there are so few out there and even fewer that actually work well enough to use (MAME being an exception, but that's a far cry from an N64). I'm amazed this emulator has come as far as it has, and I look forward to version 1.0. You just have to be willing to experiment with the settings (sometimes even the settings that you don't understand and are really apprehensive about touching!). And it needs a bit more smoothing with regards to the audio plugin, but I've never seen an emulator so robust, stable, and functional. I'm having a lot more fun, and this thing is worth the money, easily. I found one or two ROMs were faulty, nothing to do with Sixtyforce whatsoever. Also, no matter how sure you are, make sure your game ROM works. audio plugin, expansion pack, speed limiter, and the big one that helped me make major games work: multisample level, under graphic settings). In every case, try running the ROM again and again with various settings on/off (i.e. But a fair number of these games run perfectly otherwise. Otherwise, try toggling the "enable audio plugin" setting (or, worst case, just toggle the entire "enable sound" setting). There were others, and you should try your own collection! Sound may still be problematic and a bit skippy on some titles, but I found that disabling in-game music works most times. Again, these are only three that I can remember. Off the top of my head, I have been able to get GoldenEye, Diddy Kong Racing, Perfect Dark (#1) working perfectly, with NO graphics or interface problems. Important ammendment to my previous review! I have been able to make some games work *perfectly* that I previously may have mentioned as "technically working, but not really playable." I'm talking about major games, some of which made the N64 popular and definitely make this emulator an incredible must-have fun item. It is clear that Coda pulls away on that front, but cool that both companies still care about smaller customers.Ĭoda is miles ahead of notion in data processing, handling, visualization, organization, automation, computation, etc. The 10% of people who buy a 10$ plan isn't much compared to the 100+ person teams that pay for the entreprise plans. Having worked for tech companies they often don't care or at least don't prioritize mass adoption as much as they do adoption from customers or entreprise teams. Notion seems more popular but that doesn't mean much. What on earth is Coda up to? Are they about to drop some massive, awe-inspiring product bomb that will change this space completely, or is Notion just an insanely scrappy team that deserves a medal for what they've accomplished on a skinnier budget?Īnd most importantly: which product should I use?! I know Notion had a year's head start, but a year isn't that long. Right now the products are eerily similar, and if anything Notion is way ahead with a far more usable mobile app, better sidebar customization and deeper hierarchies, and a gigantic community (strangely, Coda's community is quite small). That's because, aside from a far prettier design, I don't see where that money is going with Coda. It is very hard for me to wrap my head around this fact. Coda has raised a whopping $240M according to Crunchbase. One thing that's pretty shocking to me is the difference in funding. Naturally, the products are slightly different and will benefit different people in different ways, but they're also strikingly similar, so the comparison is warranted. It benefits everyone to have a better understanding of which one will suit their needs. Does anyone have a sense of which of these companies is in the lead, and which product people should use? It takes a lot of time and energy, not to mention precious buy-in from the people you work with, to adopt one of these tools. This post isn't meant to whip up animosity but to get feedback on the state of two very similar companies as of 2021. The next few photographs capture the intricate work by the sculptor. I was born and raised in New York and yet I did not know this bit of trivia: a smaller version of the Sibelius Monument is located on the grounds of the headquarters of the United Nations in New York and it was also created by Eila Hiltunen, who died in Helsinki on Monday, November 10, 2003. We previously evaluated the turbo four-cylinder in the front-drive Atlas, and it delivered enough low-end power to launch the SUV with surprising vigor. The base engine is now available with front- or all-wheel drive the 2018-20 Atlas paired the 2.0-liter only with front-wheel drive. Regular gas is fine, though output will likely decline (a VW spokesperson declined to say how much). The Atlas’ base engine, Volkswagen’s workhorse turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder, achieves 235 horsepower and 258 pounds-feet of torque on premium gasoline. Test-drive for yourself to see.Ģ021 Volkswagen Atlas | photo by Kelsey Mays Drivetrains: Less So The R-Line doesn’t change suspension tuning, but some R-Line trims get 21-inch wheels with low-profile tires, which could add harshness themselves. Shock absorption over sewer covers shows polish, as does isolation at highway speeds. What’s more, that was with our test car’s 20-inch wheels, which add some impact harshness - though nothing too objectionable - versus the 18s with higher-sidewall tires that were on our 2018 Atlas. Rivals like the Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride, both of which are newer on the scene, feel more tied down in terms of body control, but if sheer comfort is your goal, the Atlas is about as good as it gets from a mass-market mid-size SUV. Quick maneuvers induce some initial body roll, but the suspension maintains reasonable composure through sweeping curves. Turning the steering wheel requires light effort but provides quick, decisive turn-in. Suspension and steering tuning carry over unchanged for 2021, Volkswagen officials told me, and that’s just fine. Three-row SUVs can safely err on the side of ride comfort over handling chops - parents aren’t exactly carving up on-ramps in these rigs - but the Atlas has always stood out for blending the two. Less has changed in back, where the Atlas remains as boxy-looking as ever - a missed opportunity, but I’ll take what happened up front as good enough. The bumper cladding retreats from its erstwhile prominence, and available R-Line trims add prominent outboard openings. They extend into headlights with curvier frames for 2021, and the whole of it makes for a look that’s less squared off. Gone are the cheese-grater crossbars on the Atlas’ grille, replaced by a new grille with leaner, simpler bars. In the refresh, Volkswagen did some much needed rounding to the elements up front, akin to what you see on the Cross Sport. I found that version blocky and busy, even after ’s Editorial department owned one for a year. Styling is subjective enough that I seldom comment on it, but the Atlas’ visual tweaks for 2021 make it a palatable SUV - something I couldn’t say for the 2018-20 model. Related: Volkswagen Announces Prices Changes for Most of Its 2021 (and 2021.5) LineupĢ021 Volkswagen Atlas | photo by Kelsey Mays Visual Tweaks Add Up We tested a well-equipped 2021 Atlas with the V-6 and AWD, but we’ve also evaluated front-drive and four-cylinder versions. You can find information on that model on the Atlas’ 2021 model-year page. Ĭonfusingly, Volkswagen is also producing a half-year addition - the 2021.5 Atlas - with some minor changes I’ll detail below. New for 2020, the Atlas Cross Sport is a related two-row model covered separately on compare the two SUVs here. Three standard rows of seats carry up to seven people (six if you get second-row captain’s chairs). Stack up the trims here, and compare the 20 Atlas here. A non-turbo V-6 remains available on all but the base trim level both engines pair with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Volkswagen updated the Atlas for 2021 with smoother styling, more technology and wider availability for its base engine, a turbo four-cylinder. The Atlas doesn’t quite eliminate the sacrifices, but it minimizes them as much as any mid-size SUV could. Versus the competition: If your motivation is sheer practicality, family SUVs always lose out to minivans - a necessary sacrifice, some might argue, to avoid driving a four-wheeled toaster. The verdict: Updated styling makes the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas more palatable in superficial ways, and its fundamental strengths endure well beyond that. |
